Building with a partner: how Duos split the work
Building alone is the default assumption for most first-time founders — mostly because nobody hands them another option. But some businesses are genuinely better built by two people than by one, and BIAB is built to support that from the start rather than treat it as an edge case.
The split that doesn't work
The instinctive way to divide a business between two people is to divide the customer list: you take half, I take half, we each run our own leads end to end. In practice this just creates two smaller, slower versions of the same business, because both people are still doing every part of the job — selling, delivering, following up — just with fewer hours each to do it.
The split that does
The pairs that actually move faster split by skill, not by list. One person is better at sales: prospecting, meetings, offers, follow-up. The other is better at delivery: doing the work, keeping quality high, keeping clients happy. Every deal that closes goes through both people, in the part of the process where each of them is strongest.
This only works if both people are working from the same system. If the sales-focused partner is pitching something the delivery-focused partner can't actually execute, or the delivery partner is quietly reshaping the offer without telling sales, the split breaks down fast. What it looks like day to day
In a working Duo, the two Primary Owners aren't in constant meetings about who does what. The division is clear enough that it doesn't need to be renegotiated every week: one person's day is full of conversations, the other's is full of delivery. The system in the middle — what gets promised, how it gets delivered — is the same for both, so a deal made by one partner is a deal the other can actually fulfill without surprises.
Building with someone doesn't remove the work. It just means neither of you is doing all of it alone.
